Our skin is our body’s first line of defense to combat the onslaught of heat, cold, bacteria, free radicals and pollutants. When we are under ‘attack’, our skin sends us signals. e.g.:

Red Blotches- Causes are many, but the key is to identify the culprit and neutralize it. If it comes from topical retinol or glycolics, try using gentler vitamin C or grape-seed extracts. If it comes from waxing or chemical peel, try OTC cortisone or topicals specifically geared for post procedure application. If it is Rosacea avoid vaso-dilators such as spicy, foods, alcohol, aspire and the sun and come talk to us about prescriptive treatments

Oil slicks - Primarily in the T- zone, should be treated by washing twice a day with a gentle, non-soap cleanser. Resist "degreasing" with alcohol based "toners"- these only dehydrate the skin. Try using 5% benzyl peroxide a couple of times a week. Make sure all make-up and topicals says "oil- free" on the package before you use it

Large Pores - Although pore size is for the most part what you are born with, control of the amount of debris - dead cells make-up residue etc, will govern the no. of blackhead that show up. Be scrupulously clean and use prescriptive such as salicylic acid, retinoid and AHA's, as well as moisturizers before using make-up. This will ensure that your pores are filled with prescriptive topicals and you are not left with pools of makeup pigment in the pore groves at the end of the day.

Dry Flakes - First wash your face with cool water as hot water strips your skin of moisture. Use moisturizers as well as 'Humectants' that trap the moisture in the skin as well as a Hyluronic based cream for added moisture. Be sure to exfoliate as dead flakey skin can stop the absorption of moisture from the cream and plug up the pores causing blackheads.

Sensitive Skin - Many sensitive skin conditions are the result of applying too many products. True sensitive skin has low tolerance for fragrance and preservatives., AHA's Vitamin C and some Botanicals. Test new products with a small dab on the arm for a few days before using. The fewer the fragrance free ingredient in a product the less likely your skin will react. Use 'paba' free sunscreen - zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are gentler. Reduce Acne and aging treatments can be irritating , so reduce them to once a week. Make sure applications are on dry skin as damp skin is more reactive.

Sun Damage - age spots are caused by erratic melanin pigment formation due to sun, age and hormones. Topicals containing lightening ingredients should be used with care. Only a thin layer is required and dabbing on pigmented area only will give an undesirable 'Halo" effect. AHA's are also effective in sloughing of pigmented layers of skin. Regular use of AHA's , lightening creams and sunscreens are the best way to manage sun damage.

Clogged Pores - Blackheads are oxidized product of oil and can best be avoided by using oil-free make-up, eliminating dehydrating toners that can trick the skin in producing more oil, and breaking down and softening plugs with the use of salicylic acid.

Dull Finish - Although a tanned glowing skin is much sought after, sun damage still remains one of the major factors of dull looking skin. The use of a broad spectra sunscreen together with regular exfoliation, either chemical or mechanical will whisk off dead cells exposing fresh glowing skin.

Dark circles - Genetics govern our predisposition to dilated capillaries or hyperpigmentation under the skin, which give that bruised look under the eyes. The most plausible ingredients for eye creams would be retinols which will thicken the skin and camouflaging the under skin darkness while Vitamin K can decrease discoloration due to dilated capillaries

Under Eye Puffiness - Lack of sleep causes skin to retain water due to the elevated cortisol levels. When you sleep lat, decrease the level of salt in the body by drinking a glass of water and elevate the head on a thick pillow. Tannin in steeped teabags on the eyes and creams containing caffeine will also diminish the puffiness. A light lymph drainage treatment may also help
