Sun Protection

We all know how vital it is to protect our skin from the sun with the daily use of a sunscreen/sunblock. But do we know the truths and myths involved in this protection? Following are a few of the most misunderstood 'Fictions' regarding sun protection, followed by the "Facts". Articles

Sunscreen: Fact or Fiction

Fiction : The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in a sunblock/sunscreen governs whether the sunblock has good protection. Fact : The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) relates to UVB frequencies ONLY and has nothing to do with UVA radiation, which may cause deeper and more long-term damage. The key is finding a UVA and UVB BROAD SPECTRUM sunblock that protects from both. In that broad-spectrum sunblock also look for the very important protective ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. And, by the way, The FDA states that SPF of 15 is adequate.
Fiction: Sunscreens and sunblocks will prevent skin cancer. Fact : Damage from sun exposure is cumulative. Skin cancers can form even with and after use of sunscreens due to previous UV exposure. But, sunscreens more than anything else will reduce the risk of additional UV damage. There is never a bad time to start using a sunscreen or sunblock.
Fiction: Skin cannot burn on cloudy days. Fact : On cloudy days, the skin can be exposed to fewer UVB rays, but 65% of the sun’s damaging (UVA) rays can penetrate both clouds and glass. Therefore, an unsuspecting person without UVA/UVB BROAD SPECTRUM sun protection can become severely burned while driving a car on a cloudy day.
Fiction: If a person is wearing a foundation make up with SPF’s of 4 or 8, then she won’t need an additional sunscreen or sunblock. Fact : The FDA states that a minimum of SPF 15 is needed for sun protection. Very few make-up foundations contain higher numbers. If you find one that does have an SPF 15, then use it, but if you can’t find one, then be sure to wear an SPF 15  or more sunscreen under your foundation.
Fiction: Sunblocks and sunscreens are the only products that can protect from sun damage and premature aging. Fact : Even though sunblocks and sunscreens are essential, there are other products that can even increase the effectiveness of the sunblock. Topical Vitamin C ascorbyle is definitely one. Also, skin care products that contain ingredients such as Hyluronic acid, protect the skin from the sun. Anti-aging treatments that contain Vitamin A, Alpha Hydroxies, and Beta Hydroxies can also help combat premature aging of the skin caused by the sun.
